Other People’s Opinions, Your paralysis!

Who would you be if you didn't care what anyone thought of you? What would you do? What attitude would you have towards life? What would your life look like? What would you be doing right now if you absolutely had no fear?

I am Chemical engineer by profession and this idea both pains me and inspires me. It pains me because I'm not convinced that chemical engineering is my passion but society convinced that it was the right to do, so far so good. But it also inspires me because it allows me to wonder, what else I could do if I just forgot about surviving for just moment.

Why do we let society and the world dictate to us what our lives should look like, what we should or should not do? Who made up the rules anyways and why are we so afraid to break them?

Mid-life crisis at 31

This is my frustration as a 31 year old who has, until now, done my best to follow the rules and colour in between the lines. I've always tried to kinda break the rules in a nice way and I found out the hard way, there is No Nice way to break the rules, society is eagerly waiting to punish the renegades!

Why don't you Dare to Dare?

Most of us just want to be free and do what we want, but we don't dare to even dare! We don't dare to give our bosses the middle finger and get on with doing what we love, we don't dare to tell our parents we will follow whatever career path we want or marry whoever the hell we want, we don't dare to... well I think you get the point!

What does your life look like thus far?

Let's have a look at some likely scenarios for your journey thus far! You are a whizkid and made your first million before you turned 31? You had your own startup and became wildly successful, sold it and now your are looking for the next big challenge? You joined your family business and now you are looking to take over?

Or did you follow the rules, go to school, get a degree, get a high paying job, live below your means, save money, start a family and live happily ever after? Let me take a wild guess and say, 99% of us are mostly likely in the second category! So how is that working out for you?

Are you happy, fulfilled and the luckiest guy alive to have your job? Some people are, no offence but this article is not for them. This article is for people that want to create their own rules and actually live their own lives instead of simply existing within the boundaries of society!

Standing up to the Rules

Society is filled with people who don't know themselves but are waiting eagerly to tell you who you should be! People that want tell you how to do it yet they've never done it! People who will give you every reason why your ideas will Not work. If you really think about it, society is pretty mediocre, society cares what Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian did last night, Society voted for Brexit and Trump... I could go on but I think you get the point.

Take a chance on yourself, Be the little Engine(er) that could!

Here is the thing, people will judge you anyway! Life will carry on anyway, the next 10 years will come and go anyway, whether you reach for your dreams or not! The people whose opinions you fear won't be there to pick you up when you fall, or to celebrate your successes when you win! So why do you care? Your life will pass by, whether you participate in it or NOT!

So why is a Chemical engineering ranting off like this, well because, we may be nerds,  but we are not as boring as people may think. We have plenty of options too! I hope I inspired you a lot. I would feel terrible if I just left you hanging without offering you some tips. We need to break the rules and get out of our comfort zones. The world is changing fast and the ‘other people’ with the ‘opinions’ will get left behind.

Sometimes you have to get out of your own way to break the rules. I found when I was in this lonely space, there are always certain people in my life I could trust to feel safe. Find those wonderful supporters who make you feel invincible to take a chance on YOU!
