Success vs happiness

Success vs Happiness

The Burning Question

As the year comes to a close, it is a good time for some introspection and to light a fire in our hearts to take us forward into the new year. So here is the burning question for me as this year closes.

Success vs Happiness

So why does it feel like for most people success is in competition with happiness? Is it really? So what comes first success or happiness? Does success bring happiness or does happiness bring success? These are all very good questions to ask.

These two when properly understood are not really in competition with each other. So do they mean the same thing? It really depends on your definition. Most people believe that they will be happier when they finally reach the mountain top! When they get that car, that house on the hill, that spouse etc.!!! This is not only an illusion but it is incredibly false.

You don’t have to take my word for it, just look around and see. How many people do you know that have achieved worldly success that you can say are truly happy? How many drug addictions and how many broken marriages? This is because, even when people achieve success they can be still be very unhappy.

What does Success have to do with Happiness??

Unsuccessful people can also be miserable and unhappy! That is because happiness has nothing to do with success, it has all to do with you and how you choose to live your life and treat the people around you. How much you appreciate what you already have, so that when you have more it can just keep getting better.

Don’t put off your happiness for tomorrow because tomorrow may never come, be happy now, while you create the life of your dreams and become wildly successful.

Happiness Creates Success but Success Does Not Create Happiness.

So what is true success and what is true happiness? There seems to be a contradiction in peoples minds about these two things or rather some kind of competition. The truth is: happiness creates success but success does not necessarily create happiness.

Happiness is an inside job, it is your responsibility, your choice and your attitude towards life. Happiness comes from being truly grateful for all that you are and all that you have. Success however you’ve defined it, comes mainly from what you do with what you have! Success can also be measured by how many people you’ve helped along the way and how many lives you’ve touched.

I suggest that you be happy first and then from that space create your success. Life is too short to wait for success. Here is a list of the 12 things that make a man rich. Remember this message as you celebrate Christmas, remember to love, to share, to be grateful, to appreciate those you love and just be, just be happy!

I leave you with one last thought, written by one of the greatest minds ever to write about personal achievement and success, Napoleon hill.

Here is what he described as the 12 things that makes a man rich!

The 12 things that makes a man rich, taken from Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow rich.

  1. A positive mental attitude. (Observe that it heads the list.)
  2. Sound physical health
  3. Harmony in human relations
  4. Freedom from fear
  5. The hope of future achievement
  6. The capacity for applied faith
  7. Willingness to share ones blessings with others
  8. To be engaged in the labour of love
  9. An open mind on all subjects toward all people
  10. Complete self discipline
  11. Wisdom with which to understand people
  12. Financial security.

Notice that Fincincial security comes at number 12 but that not mean that it is not important. If you would like to be in a better place financially next year, I strongly suggest that you have a look at this powerfull education system. It will not only teach you the skills you will need in the future as the world becomes more technoligically advanced, but it will help you to never worry about number 12 again, getting you closer to your happy place! Thanks for the great blog. I like the comparison between success and happiness. As an entrepreneur the point that happiness creates success helps to keep pursuing happiness.

Thank you Janette, so many of us get stuck chasing succes believing that it will bring us happiness, while this can happen, it is not a given. I think what we really want is happiness and that is available right now!

So many people believe success with bring them happiness but get there and find out it has not. A mentor of mine uses the phrase ‘ fortunately of unfortunately you take yourself with you’ . Meaning people might become successful but the same self is still there. Happiness is not a by product of success.
